Introduction of new Entry/Exit System (EES) of EU’s Schengen Territory

The European Union has introduced a new Entry/Exit System for the Schengen territory beginning on 12 October 2025. This system is called the Entry/Exit System (EES), and it is:

  • Automated IT System
  • Registers non-EU nationals
  • Applies to short-stay travelers crossing external borders
  • Includes visa and visa-free travelers
  • Records entry refusals

The benefits of the EES are as follows:

  • Identification of overstayers
  • Reduced wait times
  • Real-time information sharing
  • Simplified, automated border procedures
  • Reinforced security
  • Fighting Identity fraud

How does it work?

  1. The traveler must present their travel documents to the border guard and..
  2. Also provide their biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) which is registered in the EES.
  3. The border guard checks the traveler’s information, ask questions, and digitally records the entry in the EES.
  4. The traveler benefits from a smoother and more efficient border crossing process.

Information campaign: Objectives

  • Inform about the new border procedures under the EES and related data protection aspects.
  • Explain how EES is strengthening security in the Schengen area.

Target Audience:

  • Non-EU nationals who plan to travel to European countries using the EES for a short stay – up to 90 days within 180 day period
  • EU nationals and nationals of Schengen countries

Information activities will be conducted mainly:

  • At the Member States’ border crossings (air, land, sea)
  • At consulates in non-EU countries
  • At the carriers’ information desks and hubs
  • Online

During the DG-Home online campaign awareness, questions were asked regarding Heads of States and Governments if they would also be subject to undergo the new border system. We were told that nothing will change for this group, only that they must inform the host country via a Note Verbale of the traveling dignitary(s) and companions.

Officials with diplomatic, official, and ordinary passports who will enter/exit the territory on a short-stay basis will be subjected to undergo the EES.
